Another Tool in the Toolbox

What are UI frameworks?

A simple way to describe a UI framework: a set of pre-made libraries and elements that can help with web development. Developers can use these elements to produce websites without starting from scratch.

A good analogy for using a UI Framework would be creating a house. You could gather all the materials yourself, or you could use things others have made. Making a house from scratch allows for complete creative freedom in exchange for lots of time and effort. On the other hand, using tools and materials from other sources can save time at the cost of customization! However, no matter what tools or materials you obtain, you still need to know how to build a house. Similarly in web design, simply accessing a UI framework doesn’t mean you can use it effectively.

Bootstrap5: A new tool in the toolbox!

Bootstrap5 isn’t a programming language, but it can be a powerful tool for web development. In a way, it’s like another tool to add to your toolbox. It’s not just a quick shortcut for everything, you still need to know a few things before using it. Without some understanding of HTML and CSS, it would be really difficult to use Bootstrap5!

Even if it can be a little overwhelming, Bootstrap5 has many components for developers. It’s hard to remember all of them but the Bootstrap documentation makes using each component easier to understand. There is a bit of a learning curve for UI frameworks. I found myself referring to their documentation a lot while working with Bootstrap5 for the first time. I found the nav component the most confusing. I struggled with the syntax of the classes and found lots of “</div>” tags where they shouldn’t be.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced developer, UI frameworks like Bootstrap5 offer many design opportunities and room to grow. I found this module to be really exciting because the documentation showed how many possibilities there are. It’s truly inspiring to be able to see a website come to life.
